Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa side made it through to the final thanks to an exciting 2-1 win over Portuguese team Porto. The game was feisty with a lot of confrontations, which ended up with Villa’s Emile Heskey being sent off in the second half for pushing Porto’s Maicon away. Before that though, Porto actually started the game the brightest but it was the English team who opened the scoring on 14 minutes when second half villain Heskey met a cross with his head, sending the ball crashing into the net. Villa then upped the ante and managed to score a second in the 37th minute with Sidwell getting the goal.

Porto made three changes at half time in an attempt to get back into the game, but the second half was a rather stop-start affair with many confrontations, ending in Heskey’s sending off. Porto scored a consolation goal in injury time.

In an intriguing encounter in the other semi-final, Juventus managed to overcome the resistance of Real Madrid, winning the game 2-1. Real Madrid were on the front foot for most of the game, but Juventus playing the typical Italian counter-attacking style were more decisive. They took the lead in the third minute through Cannavaro and although Madrid pressed after that, Juve still managed to forge out some more chances.

But Madrid equalised just before half time when Ronaldo converted a cheeky penalty. The second half flowed much the same as the first, but it was the Italians who found the decisive break through early on when Salihamidzic scored in the 47th minute. The score line remained unchanged and Juve marched into the final.
