Aston Villa went into the last game of their group stage knowing they had to beat Atlante by two clear goals to progress through to the knock out stages. They duly obliged by winning the game 3-1 on the night, but not without doing it the hard way. Thanks to a Davis own goal in the 20^th minute, Atlante took the lead but this was only after Aston Villa captain Styilian Petrov was forced off the pitch with a shoulder injury. His replacement was the youngster Marc Albrighton, who justified the faith his manager had by sending him on with the equaliser in the 38^th minute.

From there on in there was only one team in it, and with a further two goals from Carew in the 48th and Young in the 61^st, Villa secured their passage through to the semi finals. Manager Martin O’Neill, knowing his team required goals to progress, fielded a near full strength team from the squad he had available, and the gamble seemed to pay off. The only worry now though for the team is to see how bad Petrov’s injury is, especially with the start of the season only two weeks away.

For their part, Porto progressed through to the semis thanks to a 0-0 draw against Turkish side Besiktas. They will now fancy their chances of progressing to the final but Aston Villa may have something to say about that.
