The Gunners, who had been in a rich vein of form prior to the Man City game, had hoped to really re-ignite their title chances by beating the Citizens. However they failed to replicate the feat of London neighbours Chelsea, who had beaten City 2-1 the week before, and went down 1-0 to Roberto Mancini’s side.

However Arsenal’s passing was crisp and they did give the City defence constant headaches. Gervinho and Robin Van Persie worked industriously upfront and they both tested Joe Hart in the City goal. Van Persie had a goal disallowed for offside while Man City’s Micah Richards was lucky not to have a penalty given for handball.

Villa went down 0-2 to Liverpool last Sunday, with some woeful defending from set pieces in the first half proving to be their undoing. Both goals arrived with minutes of each and both came from corners.

Arsenal will look for a quick return to winning ways when they travel to Birmingham to take on inconsistent Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger has come out and said this week that some of his stars are not playing as well as they should and he directed particular comments at Robin van Persie. The Striker was left out of the starting line up in the Champion’s League this week and the out of favour Niklas Bendtner was included. Incidentally Bendtner has been linked this week with a move to Villa in the transfer window as Houllier looks to boost his attack in the January Transfer window. Cesc Fabregas is another player who may miss this game as he has a niggling hamstring problem.

Whatever team face Arsenal at the weekend will have to put in the kind of performance Aston Villa showed when they played Manchester United a few weeks back. One player who is expected to have a big game is Ashley Young as he has grown in to his role as one of Villa’s biggest threats going forward. After losing two goals to nil at Ewood Park last week Gerard Houllier will have to make sure Stewart Downing and Stephen Ireland get a grip on the midfield early on. You can see how they play with live streaming football from oleolefootball.watchlive.net.

For all their promise and great start to the season, Aston Villa have found themselves going backwards again; the same thing happened last season after Christmas. The team haven’t won in three league games and indeed, haven’t scored a goal along the way either. As a result, martin O’Neill has seen his side drop to seventh in the league table, although the points gap between themselves and Tottenham in fourth place is only two points, Villa having 36 points.

Before the game on Wednesday, Aston Villa face an FA Cup fourth round encounter at Villa Park against League One side Brighton and it will be interesting to see the kind of team Martin O’Neill selects for the match. This past Wednesday evening Aston Villa managed to progress through to the Carling Cup final thanks to an astonishing 6-4 home leg victory over Blackburn Rovers, going through 7-4 on aggregate.

For their part, Arsenal managed to climb to the top of the league thanks to a 4-2 victory over Bolton at the Emirates Stadium in a rearranged game last Wednesday evening. Although second place Chelsea have a game in hand over the Gunners and could overtake them again should they win it, Arsene Wenger’s troops will enjoy their lofty position.
