The Toffees have endured a barren spell against the Villans since their 4-1 thumping of the Midlands outfit at home in March 2006. Tim Cahill bagged a brace for David Moyes’ side on that occasion, with James McFadden and Leon Osman also contributing.

Since that encounter, the Villans have held the edge over their rivals, although Everton did beat them in the FA Cup in 2009. The last two games between the two sides have ended in 2-2 scorelines. Everton had the same scorers on both occasions- Leon Osman and Leighton Baines, with the latter netting from the spot.

Aston Villa’s last game was a FA Cup clash against Bristol Rovers, an outing Alex McLeish’s side won 3-1. Everton have had a shorter break as they were also in action in midweek against Tottenham Hotspur.

Kevin McDonald will have to pick his Aston Villa players up to play Everton after a thorough thrashing from the Magpies last weekend. Everton though are also at a low point with two defeats in a row at the start of the season. One thing is certain and that is one team will be happy at the end of the match at Villa Park on Sunday. The Villa side that we have seen since the resignation of Martin O’Neill failed to appear against Newcastle in what was probably a temporary glitch. The team has not been short of morale in the last two weeks and they have showed enough faith in McDonald to overcome one bad result. The team will look to players like Carew, Downing and team captain Petrov to lead the way. They will no doubt have gained confidence with the arrival of Stephen Ireland in midfield. The player was sent the other way when Milner was sold to Manchester City.

David Moyes will be using every tactic in the book to convince the Everton players that this is a game they can win. He may well be right as we all know that Moyes has created a decent team that is only just completely free from injury for the first time for years. He just needs his key players like Neville, Cahill and Pienaar to pull their fingers out and put in the kind of performances we know they are all capable of. The turnaround is not so much a matter of if, but when and the sooner the better for the toffees. See if Moyes or McDonald gets it right on Sunday with live streaming Premiership football at oleolefootball.watchlive.net.

Everton are now eight in the league and their chances of ending up in the top four are slipping away. Midfielder Tim Cahill has urged his team to make one more huge effort to get themselves a European spot for next year. The clock is ticking though. The last two games has seen Everton only able to come away with a draw; from here on in they need full points from every game.

Aston Villa are fifth in the league, after a 3-2 defeat at Manchester United last Sunday. Villa were unlucky not to get anything from the game after taking a 2-1 lead at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for the Villan’s they conceded two goals in the last ten minutes. John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor scored Villa’s goals at Old Trafford. Villa are now six points behind Arsenal in fourth place, but only one point ahead of opponents Everton.

Striker Emile Heskey is a doubt for Villa after he missed the defeat at Old Trafford, but Dutch left back Wilfried Bouma could return to the squad after being out injured for eight months. Martin O’Neill shouldn’t have any other major selection headaches ahead of this important clash.

Everton are in good form and defeated Wigan 4-0 at Goodison last Sunday. Jo scored a brace, Marouane Fellaini and Leon Osman scoring a goal each. The Toffees are now sixth just one point behind Aston Villa in the Premier League. European qualification looks likely for a third consecutive season for David Moyes side. Everton have shown great consistency this season, losing only two games in the last 15 Premier League games.

Everton could stick with the same team that hammered Wigan last weekend, with David Moyes playing his favour 4-4-1-1 formation. Marouane Fellaini is likely to start just behind lone striker Jo, so French striker Louis Saha may have to be happy with a place on the bench.
