Rovers, who lost to Wolverhampton on the opening day of the season, slumped to a second straight league defeat as Aston Villa beat them 3-1. Villa raced to a 2-0 lead at half time and although Morten Gamst Pedersen’s goal from David Hoilett’s cross gave Blackburn some hope, it was quickly extinguished when Darren Bent netted Villa’s third midway through the second half.

Everton, who did not play on the opening day of the season, were stunned 1-0 by Queens Park Rangers at Goodison Park. Although the Toffees created the better chances, they were punished for their wastefulness as Hoops veteran Tommy Smith curled home the winner after being set up by Akos Buzsaky.

This is already looking like a must win game for Blackburn manager Steve Kean. Barring Hoilett’s individual piece of brilliance that led to Pedersen’s goal, there was nothing much to crow about for Rovers fans against Aston Villa

The opening weekend of the 2010/11 English Premier League season sees Everton at Ewood Park. Steven Pienaar is still yet to commit his future but is likely to start on Saturday and could even pair up with Fellaini to make a formidable central midfield partnership.
