Blackburn were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last weekend. Rovers boss Steve Kean chose to play defensively, which was understandable at the beginning of the game, but his side didn’t even grow into the game after Rafael van der Vaart’s first half goal.
Rovers failed to register a single shot on target and Spurs deservedly sealed all three points when Kyle Walker curled in a fabulous second half free kick. Rovers are now second from bottom and even victory in their last two games may not be enough for them to survive the drop.
Wigan thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 last weekend, a result that could go a long way in guaranteeing league survival for the Latics. Roberto Martinez’s side are fourth from bottom going into this weeekend’s round of fixtures.
Wigan Athletic can take another massive step towards Premier League survival by beating second from bottom Blackburn Rovers on Monday in Round 37.

Ewood Park will be the venue for Blackburn v Wigan Athletic Live on Saturday the sixth of November for a premier league fixture. The result of this game will mean that one of these two sides may be in the drop zone. Blackburn are already at eighteenth in the table and Sam Allardyce will be determined to rectify that problem in front of the home fans. Wigan will not be an easy team to beat and both managers will understand that the other team is capable of taking the points. See which manager is celebrating with live streaming premier league football at oleolefootball.watchlive.net.
With Blackburn struggling for goals news that former Man City player Benjani Mwaruwari is hopeful of regaining his fitness for the Wigan game bodes well for Big Sam. The Zimbabwean went off against Chelsea at the start of the second half with a ham string problem. He had scored his first goal for the club and although he was unable to make any impact at City, Sam Allardyce has earmarked him for big performances with Blackburn. The most important thing at the weekend though will be to make sure that Salgado, Samba and Jones are playing at their best because any defensive lapses will be devastating. Givet is unlikely to feature after being taken off in the first half of the Chelsea game.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez will probably try and exploit any defensive weakness by fielding a relatively strong attacking line. With Hugo Rodallega leading from the front he will be supported by N’Zogbia and it’s likely that Jordi Gomez will start in place of di Santo. Another change may be Victor Moses for Diame which worked well against Fulham as the manager looked for options. See how tey line up with live streaming football from oleolefootball.watchlive.net.
Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn Rovers team face the challenge of Roberto Martinez’ Wigan Athletic this coming Wednesday evening in the English Premier League, with both teams desperate for the three points on offer. Although currently sitting in twelfth position in the English Premier League table, Blackburn’s position is not as safe as it first appears. They have 24 points to their name but this is only five points above the relegation zone at the moment; they also have played a game more than all the other teams below them in the table. Blackburn actually won their last league game – a 2-0 home win over Fulham, but this was their first victory in the league in ten league games.
Rovers also miss out on the weekend’s fourth round FA Cup action as they were dumped out at the third round stage. To compound matters even further for the Rovers fans, their team lost the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final last Wednesday evening to Aston Villa by the remarkable score line of 6-4. They lost the tie 7-4 on aggregate.
Wigan are fourteenth in the league table at the moment, but they are in the same boat as Blackburn. They only have 22 points and are therefore only three points ahead of the relegation zone. The only difference is that Wigan actually have a game less than all the teams around them as opposed to Blackburn’s a game more. Wigan also won their last league game; a 2-0 victory away to struggling Wolves.

Blackburn will be hoping for three crucial points when they face North West rivals Wigan at Ewood Park on Sunday. Rovers currently find themselves just outside the relegation zone, but will be confident of victory over the potential European challengers Wigan. Blackburn’s 1-0 defeat at Stoke in their last Premier League has left the side from Lancashire just three points clear of the relegation zone, the only goal of the game coming from Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence. They have also been rocked by the news this week that last season’s top scorer Roque Santa Cruz is planning to move on during the summer. The Paraguayan has admitted that he wants to sign for a side with more ambition.
The striker is believed to have played his last game for Blackburn after having surgery on a troublesome knee problem. Unfortunately for Rovers boss Sam Allardyce he will also be without Jason Roberts, who has revealed he may not be fit for action for another week.
Wigan have had a superb season under manager Steve Bruce this season. The Latic’s sit just four points behind seventh placed West Ham and a European spot, but they suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to Arsenal in their last game, which didn’t help their European charge. They took the lead against the Gunners through Mido, before goals from Theo Walcott, Mikael Silvestre, Andrey Arshavin and Alexandre Song were enough to seal victory for the Londoners. Wigan know they have to keep winning to retain any hope of clinching that European spot, starting with a victory in this game.
Manager Steve Bruce will have to decide whether to include Egyptian Amr Zaki in the squad or keep the striker sweating on a return. The only other worry the Wigan boss has is South Korean midfielder Cho Won-Hee, who will be out for the remainder of the season with a calf injury.
