Before Tuesday evening’s encounter both sides will have seen action in the Premier League but the results of these matches are unknown at the time of writing this preview. Blackpool are due to visit Manchester City on Saturday, while Birmingham entertain Arsenal on the same day. Irrespective of the results though, both teams have had contrasting fortunes so far this season. While Blackpool have confounded all their critics and are riding relatively high in the league, Birmingham are doing the opposite; where everyone expected them to do well this season they are actually at the wrong end of the standings.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Blackpool visited Sunderland and managed to come away with a very good 2-0 victory. At the time the Tangerines moved up to eighth in the table, but this could have obviously changed by the time Tuesday evening comes along. With 25 points t their name, Blackpool boss Holloway feels his side are only another fifteen points away from staying in the Premier League next season.

For their part, Birmingham are not having the best of seasons. Prior to Saturday’s match they entertained Manchester United but did manage a creditable draw against the league leaders, albeit with a last minute equaliser. After this match they were seventeenth in the table with nineteen points.
