Bolton gave their manager some temporary respite as they beat fellow Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers in the last round of fixtures. The Trotters took an early 2-0 lead as goals from Mark Davies and Nigel Reo-Coker saw them gain the upper hand.

However dismal as Rovers’ first half performance had been, they threw everything they had at Bolton in the second half and the match looked destined for an interesting finish after Yakubu pulled one back for Blackburn. However the Trotters held on to claim all three points, much to the relief of the visiting fans.

Newcastle were beaten 2-3 by West Bromwich Albion in their last game. In form striker Demba Ba again scored two goals but they were in vain as Paul Scharner’s late strike grabbed victory for the Baggies.

Bolton will look to build on their midweek victory over Blackburn when they meet Newcastle on Monday.
