Newcastle had their unbeaten run snapped as they went down 3-1 to league leaders Manchester City last weekend. Despite City having most of the possession, Newcastle kept them at bay for the first half before Ryan Taylor gave away a penalty that Mario Balotelli converted. Just minutes later, Taylor was again at fault as he allowed Micah Richards to stroke home City’s second of the game.

City added a third, again from the penalty spot before Dan Gosling snatched a consolation goal for Newcastle. It was a bad result for Newcastle, but not completely unexpected given the form City were in.

United didn’t turn in the perfect performance but did enough to edge Swansea City 1-0. Mexican forward Javier Hernandez scored what was to be the winner early in the first half. United staved off a fair bit of Swansea pressure in the second half to hold on to their early advantage.

It is the Red Devils vs the Magpies as Manchester United host Alan Pardew’s Newcastle this weekend.

Monday will see the FA Cup and Charity Shield winners take on last season’s Championship winners at Old Trafford in a match that Magpies fans will hope to be a statement of intent. Many people were sad to see them relegated and will want to see them do well against the big clubs on their return.

Newcastle have got plenty of experience and ability and will look to take the game to Manchester as Chris Hughton will know they can’t afford to sit back and allow Ferguson’s side room to attack. Sol Campbell is likely to play and is keen to prove he’s still capable of a commanding performance against Premiership big guns. Andy Carrol has been pulled out of the squad for an England under 21 fixture after picking up a back problem at Ibrox, which means he could possible miss out. Jonas Gutierrez and  Fabricio Coloccini are expected to feature as long as they are ok after their Argentina game against their Irish Republic.

Fergie will probably field Javier Hernandez after his freak goal against Chelsea helped win the Charity Shield last week. The player is highly rated by his fellow players with Vidic and Scholes openly talking up his abilities. Dimitar Berbatov also scored and will want the opportunity to defend his position in the team against any newcomers. Valencia should be a certain player as he starts to find form too.
