Before Wednesday evening’s game, both sides have a weekend fixture to traverse – at the time of writing this preview the results of these games is as yet unknown. Newcastle travels to Wigan on Sunday, while the day before West Ham entertains fellow strugglers Wolves.

Newcastle, under new manager Alan Pardew, desperately needs the three points to rescue what is becoming a nightmare season. Prior to the weekend games the team was sitting rock bottom in the Premier League standings and the outlook for the next couple of months or so is not very good. Avraam Grant has his work cut out to try and rescue something from the current season. The January transfer window will go a long way to determining whether Wes ham remain a Premier League club next season.
