Avraam Grant had the unfortunate experience of facing Manchester United in his first game in charge of Portsmouth last weekend. Needless to say he wasn’t in the job long enough to make any difference for Saturday’s proceedings – and it showed. His team were outfought and outclassed by a rampant Man Utd side who shipped for goals past the hapless Pompey keeper in Portsmouth’s own backyard.

The game against United had three penalties given, all successfully converted. United opened the scoring with a Rooney penalty, only for Pompey to equalise themselves from the spot through Boateng seven minutes later. From then on United took control and fired in another three goals, including another Rooney penalty. As a consequence Portsmouth are still rock bottom in the English Premier League table, sitting last, three points adrift of second bottom Wolves and five points behind Bolton who are in third last position.

Burnley come into the game against Pompey on the back of a 5-3 mauling at Upton Park from West ham United. Owen Coyle’s men found themselves 3-0 down at half time and by midway through the second half were 5-0 down. They did fight back with three goals, but it was too little too late. They are now twelfth in the league with seventeen points.
