Due to postponements thanks to the adverse weather conditions in the UK, and the weekend given over to the third round of the FA Cup, Liverpool haven’t played a league game since December 29^th when they travelled to Villa Park for an exceptionally difficult tie to high flying Aston Villa. Rafa Benitez’ men pulled out all the stops to secure a fantastic victory over a main rival for that coveted fourth spot in the English Premier League table.

The win at Villa came courtesy of an injury time Fernando Torres goal which was greeted with delight by both players and fans alike. The win, their second in succession and third on four games moved Liverpool to within five points of Manchester City who currently occupy that coveted fourth position.

For their part, Stoke City come into the game against Liverpool on the back of a 3-2 home win against Fulham last time out. The win was actually Stoke’s first in the league in seven games. Because of this the side have dropped to tenth in the league table and have 24 points to their name. Although in tenth position, that is only six points ahead of the last relegation spot.
