United have raced ahead of the rest of the pack after just five games in the league. The reigning champions have been in imperious form and demolished rivals Chelsea 3-1 last weekend with Portuguese winger Nani scoring a superb goal. Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney were also on the score sheet for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

United were also triumphant in their potential banana skin Carling Cup fixture against Leeds  on Tuesday as Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs set up a comfortable 3-0 win over the Whites at Elland Road.

Stoke needed a marathon penalty shootout to down Tottenham Hotspur in their Carling Cup fixture. The Potters eventually triumphed 7-6 in the shootout with Danish keeper Thomas Sorensen saving the decisive penalty from Massimo Luongo.

After obtaining impressive results against both Chelsea and Liverpool, Stoke City will be keen for an encore against Man United when they meet the Red Devils on Saturday evening.

United’s last three games against Bolton, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion have seen the Red Devils take only three points. It has opened a five point gap between Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and league leaders Chelsea.

Against West Brom, a goalkeeping error from normally reliable Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar cost United dearly. Van der Sar spilled a Chris Brunt cross, thereby allowing Somen Tchoyi to equalise for the Baggies. Ferguson chose to start with Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov against West Brom and left Wayne Rooney on the bench.

Stoke lost 2-1 to Bolton in injury time at the Reebok last weekend. A close range volley from substitute Ivan Klasnic gave the Trotters all three points after it seemed Stoke had done enough to come away with one. Dean Whitehead was booked in the game and is suspended for the fixture against United.

Stoke City has had an ordinary season up until now and haven’t shown any convincing effort this season. Much had been expected from Fuller in his attacking role but he had failed considerably in providing breakthroughs. Kitson on the other hand played really well and scored an early goal that stunned everybody and brought some hope of a win. They seemed to be boosted enough but that wasn’t enough for them to seal a victory. Fuller and Whitehead need to play better and more watchfully as both have been charged with a yellow card. Each may face a suspension if charged again.

Manchester United has played well as a single unit and has done exceptionally well this season. Last match against city rivals Manchester City was full of action as it saw 7 goals being scored in total, with United winning by a score of 4-3. Rooney has fit well into his role as the main striker as he has delivered for his team whenever required. Owen too came into limelight after he scored despite of starting out on bench and stole the show. Fletcher played exceptionally well and scored a double. Berbatov looked threatening especially during the initial part of the first half. All in all, it was a great performance and Sir Alex Ferguson has made each of his men perform his particular role perfectly.
