Stoke slumped to a 2-0 loss against defending champions Manchester United on Tuesday evening. The game was expected to be a close one, with United missing several first choice players and starting with their third choice keeper in goal.

However a pair of penalties in either half, conceded by Jermaine Pennant and Jonathan Walters respectively, saw the Potters slump to defeat. Stoke’s attack lacked bite and Ben Amos was rarely called into action for United.

Sunderland produced another attacking master class under Martin O’Neill to beat Norwich 3-0 at home. Frazier Campbell scored a stunner for the Black Cats’ opener while Stephane Sessegnon gave ample evidence of his playmaking abilities in the second. Norwich defender Daniel Ayala scored an own goal for the third.

It is the Potters vs the Black Cats as Stoke City and Sunderland meet this weekend in Round 24 of the Premier League.

Stoke have made Jermaine Pennant a permanent fixture after his move from Real Zaragoza was sealed earlier this month. The Aston Villa front man John Carew has also joined on loan and he should be available to play against Sunderland. The balance sheet should be looking healthy with a £4.5m move For Tuncay Sanli to Wolfsburg and thrown in. With business sorted out behind the scenes, Tony Pulis will have to organise his troops to deal with the new threats that the Black Cats will bring.

Steve Bruce looks will have been happy last week to see both Sulley Muntari from Inter Milan and Stephane Sessegnon from French side PSG arrive at the club on Friday. With no less than nine players leaving the club six of those going out on loan there has been some considerable trimming of the wage bill to accommodate the new players. At sixth in the table this could be Sunderland’s best chance of succeeding with European football for some time. The problem they have is that they will need to maintain their position by beating teams like Stoke and not losing out to the Liverpool’s and Aston Villas that are certain to climb in the second half of the season. See how they play with live streaming premier league action from oleolefootball.watchlive.net.

Sunderland and manager Steve Bruce have had a great start to the season so far and a lot of the thanks has to go to newcomer Darren Bent. Bent has led the way in two of the three games and then moved over and gave some room to Kenwyre Jones in the game against Blackburn. Bent has 3 goals on the year and Jones got 2 in the last game to show that Sunderland has enough firepower to compete with the best teams in the league. If they get a quick start against Stoke City then Stoke could be in some trouble.

Stoke City has been a picture of inconsistency so far this year and have to be disappointed in the fact that they could not finish off Birmingham City last weekend. In their 0-0 tie they did manage to get by with a point but the team has to feel they should have gotten three. They have now been shutout in two straight games and haven’t found the back of the net since their first game when Jordan and Ryan Shawcross scored.
