Only two points separate the two sides in the league table going into this weekend’s round of fixtures. Villa are ninth with eleven points, while Sunderland are twelfth with nine.

Sunderland grabbed three precious points when they beat Bolton last weekend. The game failed to produce a goal till 82 minutes before playmaker Stephane Sessegnon broke the deadlock for the Black Cats. Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner then sealed all three points late in the game for Steve Bruce’s men with a cool finish. Bruce declared himself very pleased with his side’s second half performance.

Villa took the lead against local rivals West Brom last weekend through Darren Bent but the loss of Chris Herd hit them hard as they surrendered their lead and ended up losing 2-1 to the Baggies.

It is the Black Cats vs the Villans as Sunderland host Aston Villa on Saturday at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland could not take advantage of Christopher Samba’s dismissal as they drew 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers on Monday night. The Black Cats were looking for their first away win of the season but instead had to settle for their sixth draw in nine Premier League games.

Black Cats forward Darren Bent had two glorious opportunities to put his team ahead against Rovers, but failed to take full advantage of them. Manager Steve Bruce has called for the other members of his side to chip in with goals and not rely for Bent alone.

Aston Villa enjoyed a successful start under Gerard Houllier as they held Chelsea to a draw last Saturday. The Villans’ best chance of the night came late in the fixture for Nigel Reo Coker, but the midfielder could not convert his chance despite being in a one on one position with opposition keeper Petr Cech.

As of writing this article, the results of this past weekend are unknown, but prior to that both teams have had contrasting fortunes of late. Steve Bruce’s Sunderland side appear to be going backwards after such a great start to the season. They have only won one of their last six league games (prior to the weekend) and as such have dropped off in the league and are now tenth. Funnily enough, their last two wins have come against two of the so-called top four in Arsenal and Liverpool. They beat both of these teams 1-0 at home.

Sunderland have played fifteen games so far this season and their record currently stands at won six, drawn two and lost seven of their games. At home they have five wins, one draw and one defeat to their name, so not too shabby at all.

Aston Villa have strong claims for this season. They see it as a great chance to break into the top four and secure themselves a place in next season’s Champions League. Prior to the weekend's results they were sitting fifth in the league table, only a point of that fourth spot.

This season they have seven wins, five draws and three defeats to their name. Away from Villa Park Martin O’Neill’s men have won two, drawn three and lost a further two of their games.
