The Black Cats lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton last weekend. They took the lead through Kieran Richardson but failed to double it when Sebastian Larsson won a penalty. Larsson himself stepped up to convert the spot kick but failed with his effort and Sunderland fell apart from that miss as Steven Fletcher netted twice to give Wolves a 2-1 win.
Blackburn hammered Swansea 4-2 with powerful striker Yakubu running riot at Ewood Park. Yakubu scored all four of Blackburn’s goals as they moved off the bottom of the table by taking three points against the Swans.
O’Neill has already said that this is a big clash and big it is, with Sunderland looking nervously at the relegation zone above their shoulders. A win for Blackburn will see Rovers move above SAFC in the table.

Sunderland come into the second home game of the week having suffered an impromptu defeat in the first which took place on Tuesday evening. Ian Holloway’s Blackpool side were the visitors that night and somewhat surprisingly came away with a creditable 2-0 victory. This wasn’t the result Sunderland or their boss was expecting and anything other than a victory on Saturday against Blackburn will have dark clouds forming over the Stadium of Light.
Still sitting in seventh position with 27 points, Sunderland are still riding high by their standards, so Tuesday evenings defeat would have hurt them especially hard. If you have any aspirations at all in the Premier League then at the very least you have to be winning your home games. More dropped points on Saturday then the prospect of European football next season will start dropping away into the horizon.
Blackburn Rovers come into Saturday’s game against Sunderland on the back of a great 3-1 away win at West Bromwich Albion; a result that lifted the team into ninth position in the Premier League table with 25 points to their name. The team will be hoping to continue where they left off when they face Sunderland on Saturday, but the home team will no doubt have something to say about that.

Neither Sunderland nor Blackburn had very good games this week as they were both unable to get their offences going and were unable to get their defences on track. Sunderland was pushed aside by a powerful Chelsea squad by a score of 1-3 and Blackburn was shut out by Manchester City by a score of 0-2. Both teams will need to bounce back quickly if they want to come out with a win on the weekend. Be sure to tune into OleOleFootball on Saturday to watch Sunderland vs. Blackburn live and see which team can recover after a demoralizing loss.
Sunderland had high hopes entering their game against Chelsea but could not keep up with the squad that Carlo Ancelotti has put together. While Sunderland did strike first they could not hold off Chelsea for long and fell victim thanks to goals from Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, and Deco. It was a struggle for Sunderland to keep up most of the game but they did show some promise. Darren Bent scored for the second time in two games to lead the team. They have a lot to learn from the game and should be able to use those lessons to help gain a victory over Blackburn on Saturday August 22nd.
Blackburn was dominated by Manchester City on Tuesday and will need to come out with a much better effort against Sunderland. Just three minutes in Emmanuel Adebayor drove home a pass from Shaun-Wright Phillips and Man City did not look back from there.
