Liverpool suffered a setback in their quest for Champions League football as they went down 2-1 to the Gunners on home soil. The Reds went ahead when Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny put the ball past his own keeper. Minutes later, poor defending from Jamie Carragher allowed Robin Van Persie to head in Arsenal’s equalizer.

Van Persie then struck a superb volley in second half injury time to allow the Gunners to inflict a rare league defeat on the Reds at Anfield.

Sunderland had Lee Cattermole and Stephane Sessegnon sent off as they drew 1-1 with fierce local rivals Newcastle United. Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner scored the Black Cats’ only goal of the game from the spot in the first half.

It is the Black Cats vs the Reds as Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland host Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool at the Stadium Of Light in Round 28.

Sunderland also have to win this home game because after four straight defeats were followed by a draw Steve Bruce looked to have cracked under the pressure and could be facing the exit door at the end of the season despite this being a good year overall for the Black Cats. Liverpool have managed to score less than a goal a game when on the road this year but that was before they had Luis Suarez and Andy Carrol to play up front. The last time the two teams played was in September when they drew 2-2 in Anfield when Darren Bent was their best players by far so that will be one advantage Sunderland will not have.

Liverpool will have to get to fifth place which is occupied by Tottenham Hotspur at the moment if they want to qualify for Europe again as Birmingham now qualify by winning the Carling Cup which takes away the sixth place qualification spot from the Premier League. With Suarez and Kuyt looking deadly together up front the manager may be confident of doing his job and the players getting behind him but they will all be looking on anxiously at every Spurs game.

Sunderland will go against Liverpool in their next match as the Barclays Premier League gets into its 9th week this time around. Sunderland had moved down to the seventh position last weekend after their draw against Manchester United. However, they haven’t been able to play convincingly well winning only four of their all eight matches. Bent has been in scoring shoes since the season began and has scored seven goals till now making him the second highest goal scorer. He has played exceptionally well and has received huge support by Jones and Reid. It was unlucky though for Richardson to miss out due to double yellow card that saw him being sent out of the stadium. Anton Ferdinand provided a very strong and effective central defence along with Michael Turner.

Liverpool has been on a good run this season having won five of their eight matches. However much to their despair, their four match winning streak was broken by Chelsea which was quite shocking for them. They were not able to cope up with this big pressure game and yielded to it. Better still this is not the end for them as they have brilliant in-form players. Placed 2nd in the top goal scorer club’s tally, Liverpool boasts of Torres the highest goal scorer this season. Gerrard too has lent immense stability to the attack with his experience.

Sunderland were only able to stave off relegation late in the season. The Black Cats would end up in 15th place of the Premier League with 39 points. This year Roy Keane's squad are poised for at least a safe, middle of the table position. Sunderland have one confirmed injury absence for this first match of the 2008-2009 Premier League season in Kenwyne Jones who is not expected back before October.

The Reds are coming off of a very exciting season but were unable to bring home any titles. Liverpool finished in 4th place of the Premiership with 76 points, just behind the big three clubs- Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal- who were fighting for the title. In the Champions League, the Reds reached the semi-final round. Rafa Benitez is back as manager for the present title run on a squad that features some of the top players in the world including Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane. Keane is set to make his debut for the club along with David N'Gog and Diego Cavalleri.
