Spurs had a golden opportunity to leapfrog Arsenal into third following the latter’s 3-3 draw with Norwich but they made a hash of their own fixture against Aston Villa. The Lilywhites went behind when Ciaran Clark scored for Villa and then were down to ten men when Danny Rose was sent off.

Emmanuel Adebayor restored parity from the spot but Spurs were unable to find the second goal they required to win the game. While a win here would guarantee atleast fourth place and a Champions League spot for Harry Redknapp’s men, it could be rendered meaningless in two weeks’ time if Chelsea beat Bayern in the Champions League final.

Fulham beat Sunderland 2-1 in their last game, with Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele netting on either side of Bardsley’s goal for Sunderland.

Defender Danny Rose is suspended for Champions League chasing Tottenham as they host local rivals Fulham in their final league game of the season at the Lane.

Both sides enter the encounter on the back of very good midweek wins – Tottenham at home to Newcastle by 2-0, and Fulham arguably more impressively 2-0 away to Stoke, a result that alleviates some of the pressure that was hanging over boss Mark Hughes.

Tottenham now site in fourth position in the English Premier League table with 33 points and a victory against Fulham on Saturday will further cement their aspirations of playing Champions League football again next season. Indeed, boss Harry Redknapp is adamant that his Spurs side could even lift the Premier League title this season.

The victory against Newcastle on Tuesday evening came virtue of goals from Lennon and Bale, both in the second half of the encounter. Spurs have only suffered one defeat all season at home, and with a record of won five, drawn four and lost just the one, Fulham will know they have a major battle on their hands if they want to escape without defeat.

The victory at Stoke on Tuesday evening was an unexpected, but rather nice surprise for beleaguered Fulham boss mark Hughes. Although the match was a banker home win, Hughes and his players ultimately had other ideas and goals from Baird in the first ten minutes of the encounter was enough to settle the matter.

Fulham, virtue of the result on Tuesday now have nineteen points to their name and, for now, have escaped the relegation zone. Defeat on Saturday though will throw them right back in the mix.

Both teams must first traverse FA Cup ties this weekend before their encounter – Fulham are at Accrington Stanley and Spurs entertain the conquerors of Manchester united in the last round, Leeds United. At the time of writing this article, the FA Cup ties have yet to be played.

Tottenham’s push for Champion’s league football next season by finishing in the top four has faltered in the last couple of weeks or so. In their last nine games in the league they have only won three times, and indeed, have only won once in their last four games. This past Wednesday evening they travelled up to Anfield to face Liverpool for a vital fixture and they ended up deservedly losing to their rivals by two goals to nil.

Liverpool played with a much depleted team due to the many injuries they currently have, but they showed more passion and fight than their London counterparts, and this fact must have worried Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. Tottenham still cling on to fourth spot in the league, but they have been joined by Manchester City on 38 points, and Liverpool themselves are only a point behind.

Fulham haven’t won in four league games since their 3-0 demolition of Manchester United. Last time out they travelled to Blackburn and lost 2-0. They are currently ninth in the league with 27 points.
