The Baggies stumbled to their second straight 2-1 defeat in the league against Chelsea last weekend. Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long showed great predatory instinct to capitalise on Alex’s error and put the Baggies ahead early in the fixture, but Chelsea, like Man Utd before them, recovered to post a 2-1 win.

Stoke just about managed to get a point against Norwich City last weekend. The Potters fell behind when Ritchie de Laet’s header beat Asmir Begovic and then had a penalty missed in the second half when Jon Walters messed up things from the spot. However Kenwyne Jones came to their rescue when he nodded in Glenn Whelan’s cross deep into second half injury time.

West Brom welcome fellow strugglers Stoke to the Hawthorns on Saturday, knowing that nothing less than a victory will do in their bid for Premier League survival. West Brom go into this game bottom of the Premier League and seven points from safety. They drew 1-1 with Bolton in their last game at the Hawthorns.  Matt Taylor gave Bolton the lead, before the Baggies equalised through an own goal from Danny Shittu. West Brom haven’t won in their last nine, but have managed to draw the last two games against West Ham and Bolton.

Leon Barnett is expected to be out injured for a few more weeks with a knee injury, so the Baggies will be hoping that their promising central defensive partnership of Jonas Olsson and Shelton Martis continue their fine form. The pair have impressed in the West Ham and Bolton games and Leon Barnett could face a tough challenge to get back into the side.

Stoke currently sit 16th in the Premier League table on 32 points, three points ahead of the relegation zone. The Potters have won 8, drew 8 and lost 14 games back in the top flight after 24 years absence. Their form has been patchy of late, but they have put in some sterling performances this season, especially at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke continued their fine home form with a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke could be without Mamady Sidibe, who has a knee problem. The Mali striker could miss the rest of the season. Centre half Ryan Shawcross should be fit for this clash after withdrawing from the England under 21 squad in midweek. Midfielder Tom Soares has returned from his loan spell with Charlton and could be in contention for a place in the squad.
