West Ham entertained Chelsea last time out and managed to gain a very respectable point from the league leaders. The Hammers enjoyed the better of the first half in the East-West London derby and managed to take the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a converted penalty from Italian player Alessandro Diamanti.
Chelsea upped their game a bit in the second half but the Hammers still impressed, despite their lowly league position and terrible run of form of late. Nevertheless, it was Chelsea that equalised thanks to a very strange penalty. First of all the penalty was hotly debated by West Ham, and television replays suggested they were right to complain. Second, the referee ordered Frank Lampard’s penalty to be retaken twice due to encroachment. The tree-times taken penalty was actually scored each time; the final one officially counting.
For their part, Portsmouth come into the game at Upton Park on the back of a very good home victory over Liverpool last time out. They beat the Reds 2-0 and was very good value for their win, at the same time heaping more pressure on beleaguered Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

West Ham United last played away to Sunderland in March and they fell on the road by a score of 2-1 at the Stadium of Light. That result leaves Alan Curbishley's side in 10th place of the Premier League table where they have been stuck for months with 44 points on the season. They sit 5 points back of 9th place Manchester City and 4 points up on 11 place Tottenham Hotspur. However, they have a game in hand on both clubs and a victory in this home fixture to Pompey would allow the Hammers to pull to within 2 points of the 9th place Man City.
Pompey are currently in 6th place of the Premier League table with 53 points. They sit a point ahead of 7th place Aston Villa and have this match on hand against them. Their last match saw them hold serve at home over Wigan Athletic with a 2-0 victory at Fratton Park.
