The Latics grabbed only their second win of the season when they beat Sunderland 2-1 away from home last weekend. The victory, Wigan’ first away league one of the season, looked a distant probability after an error from goalie Ali Al-Habsi allowed Seb Larsson to put Sunderland ahead.

But Jordi Gomez brought Wigan back into the game with his spot kick and Sunderland then came up with a defensive gaffe of their own which Franco di Santo capitalised on in second half stoppage time to give the away side an unlikely win.

Arsenal rested several key first team players when they played Manchester City in the League Cup on Tuesday night. The Gunners slumped to a 1-0 defeat, with Sergio Aguero scoring the winner in the second half.

Wigan will look to claim the scalp of in form Arsenal when the two sides do battle in the league this weekend.

The Latics will welcome Arsenal to the DW Stadium to play their final league game of 2010. Both these sides will be out for the win and although Wigan had not lost at home in their seven games previous to the festive period starting. Wigan Athletic have been playing well at home and they will have no intention of gifting the Gunners a late Christmas present. Roberto Martinez found his side lying in sixteenth place in the table a week ago which is disheartening for the manager when they are at least getting fifty percent of their results right. The team will have to dig deep on Wednesday if they are going to start 2011 out of the drop zone and while it may be a big ask to beat Arsenal it is not impossible.

Arsene Wenger has been in the same position with Arsenal many times before but they are not quite the same team that they were when Viera and company were winning everything. While they are in touch with United at the top they will feel a little disappointed with their performance against the league leaders which saw them beaten by one goal to nil. If they are to start a serious challenge for the title then they will want to enter 2011 on a high note. This game could prove very entertaining as a result and you can watch with live streams at oleolefootball.watchlive.net.

Arsenal will be making the journey to the DW Stadium for a Premier League match against Wigan. These teams come from opposite ends of the English Premier League but both will be equally as desperate for a result. The last time the two sides faced each other was back in September when Arsenal humiliated Wigan with a 4-0 thrashing. Wigan will be keen to salvage some pride in this next game. Arsenal continue to battle for position at the top of the league, but there is currently six points separating them from leaders Chelsea; although the Gunners do have a game in hand. They will be playing Tottenham midweek before moving on to the DW Stadium. Arsenal need to deal with the disappointment of being ejected from Europe, but now is not the time to mourn. A loss against Wigan would spell disaster for the Gunners and their chances of winning the league.

Wigan suffered a  4-0 defeat at Everton last time out, the Latic’s defeated by a brace from Jo, and a goal each from Marouane Fellaini and Leon Osman. Their overall form has been patchy of late, losing three, winning two and drawing one game out of their previous six. Their home form however in recent weeks has been good winning three games, drawing one and losing only one from the last six games. However Wigan still sit in 8th position in the Premier League table, just three points off a European spot.

Egyptian striker Amr Zaki is unlikely to be in the squad after being labelled unprofessional by manager Steve Bruce, for failing to report back from international duty on time, but Lee Cattermole could return to the Wigan midfield after serving his three match ban.

Arsenal have been superb form in recent weeks, winning 2-0 against Manchester City last time out, Emmanuel Adebayor marking his return to first team action with a brace against City. Arsenal have won four out of their previous six games in the Premier League and drawing the other two. That form has taken the Gunners six points clear of nearest rival Aston Villa in the race for the fourth Champions League spot.

Arsenal welcomed back key stars Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor into the team last week for the defeat of Manchester City. Arsene Wenger however has fresh injury doubts after goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and defender William Gallas had to be replaced in their midweek Champions League clash at Villarreal.
