The Citizens slumped to a 1-0 loss on home soil to Liverpool on Wednesday night in the Carling Cup. Their first half display was one of the poorest in recent memory and the absence of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva was telling.
Kompany’s replacement Stefan Savic conceded an early penalty for a clumsy challenge on Daniel Agger. Steven Gerrard converted the penalty and Liverpool were happy enough to park the bus in the second half and take home a 1-0 advantage into the second leg.
Wigan were shocked 2-1 by Swindon Town last week, easily one of the biggest upsets in the third round FA Cup list of fixtures. The Latics are second from bottom in the league currently and have 15 points to City’s 48.

After defeat at the Stadium of light and only a draw manages against Blackburn last week, the pressure is surely on the manager. It was left to veteran Patrick Vieira to put the only goal in for City at the weekend but that was not from lack of effort from Captain Tevez and the rest of the forwards. They will have to go back to basics against Wigan in order to remind themselves why they are paid such huge sums. A lot of it has to come down to the manager because with the players in the field most games should be a walk in the park.
Wigan had easily the worst start in the Premiership but somehow Martinez has shrugged off criticism to get some sort of cohesion amongst his team. They have played much better against Spurs which got a win from and they managed to equal Sunderland too. With all eyes on City, the pressure will be off the Wigan players so Rodallega and Boselli should be able to play without the pressure normally associated with having to score at home. Wigan who has been placed in the 12th position after their three wins out of eight have yet to do much this season. Despite a slow and not so successful start, they have managed to impress many with their game. Roberto Martinez has trained his men well and they have definitely lived up to expectations to a certain level. Hugo Rodallega has been good as usual along with Scharner and Thomas. Sinclair too has proven to be a hidden talent especially after his 86th minute goal, coming onto the field in the 83rd minute. Kirkland has been impressive with his goal-keeping and has managed to save many a fantastic shot directed towards his goal.
Manchester City had moved up to the 4th position after last week’s draw. However, with five wins out of seven, their performance has been classic and superb. They have been quite menacing for the opponents. Tevez has played well for Manchester City in his first season here, supported quite amazingly by Adebayor and Bellamy. Wright-Philips as usual has played exuberantly well in both middle and defence line. However little concern for them is the injury to De Jong and they will have to take care of this as soon as possible.
As we wait for the D-day and as it arrives, it will be great to watch the players battle it out amidst thunderous roars made by fans from both sides. DW Stadium will certainly witness some brilliant team work and skills as these teams take the field and the referee blows the whistle for the start of the Manchester City vs. Wigan Athletic live on OleOleFootball.
