Atletico Madrid remain deep in trouble in the bottom reaches of the La Liga table after another defeat last weekend, this time away to Deportivo La Coruna. This weekend they entertain Espanyol at home in what is one of two Madrid v Barcelona clashes this weekend, the other being the El Classico between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Atletico’s season just lurches from one bad result to another. Last weekend they travelled to Deportivo La Coruna and eventually lost the game in controversial style 2-1. Despite taking an early 3^rd minute lead with a goal from Aguero, Atletico were pegged back and Deportivo managed to equalise on 22 minutes with Colotto. With the clock hitting 94 minutes, the controversy started. The referee awarded Deportivo La Coruna a controversial penalty that was hotly disputed by the Atletico players. As a result three Atletico players were booked, and one of these was eventually sent off. The penalty was struck in the 97^th minute of the game and was scored by Guardado, giving Deportivo all three points and condemning Atletico to their sixth defeat of the season.

As a result, the Madrid team remain stuck on seven points in the relegation zone, sitting in eighteenth position. Things do not bode well and results will have to start changing soon if the team want to dig themselves out of trouble this season.

For their part, Espanyol travel to the capital on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Getafe. Because of this result they dropped to tenth in the league table, actually swapping places with Getafe. They have thirteen points.
