Rangers travel to Tannadice this coming Tuesday evening for a rearranged fixture against Dundee United. The original game was abandoned a few weeks ago due to a waterlogged pitch with Rangers leading 1-0. Because this article is being written before the weekend's games took place, the results are obviously unknown, but the way things stand at the moment Rangers trail leaders Celtic by just two points with a game in hand (which will be the game against Dundee United). At the weekend Rangers were due to face St. Johnstone at home while Celtic travel to Motherwell.

 

So far this season, Saturday’s game notwithstanding, Rangers have played thirteen league fixtures. They have won eight of these games, drawn a further four and lost only one (to Aberdeen). Away from Ibrox they have three wins, two draws and that solitary defeat at Pittodrie to Aberdeen.

 

Assuming both Rangers and Celtic win their weekend clashes, then should Rangers beat Dundee United they will return to the top of the Scottish Premier League, one point ahead of their hated celtic rivals. Nevertheless, Rangers manager Walter Smith is not taking anything for granted and will demand nothing less than one hundred percent from his charges.

 

Dundee United have enjoyed a fair season so far and prior to the weekend’s games were only two points adrift of Rangers and four from Celtic. At home they have played six times, winning four, drawing one and losing one.

Continuing their see-saw game with celtic at the top of the SPL, it is now Rangers turn to lose top spot after last weekend's results. While they were drawing at home with Hibs their bitter rivals were winning at Hamilton, and in doing so leapfrogged the Blues into pole position in the table. Rangers travel to Tannadice Stadium on Sunday to play Dundee United in another difficult game. Rangers entertained Hibernian in a first v third placed battle last Saturday at Ibrox and only managed to gain a 1-1 draw from the encounter. Despite taking an early eighth minute lead in the game with a goal from Kris Boyd, Hibs responded well and salvaged an equaliser in the 63^rd minute thanks to a strike by Stokes. Despite the best efforts of both teams the score remained the same and the spoils were shared.

 

The two home points dropped though proved enough for hated rivals Celtic to steal the lead at the top of the SPL by one point, as they won in their away fixture at Hamilton the following day.

 

For their part, Dundee United go into the home game against the Gers on Saturday on the back of a great 2-0 away win at Aberdeen. Thanks to this win the closed the gap on Hibs in third place to just one point, while they are four points behind Celtic. United have played four games at home so far this season, winning two, drawing one and losing the other.

Dundee currently hold the final Europa league spot, but they could still lose it to Aberdeen if they lose to Rangers and Aberdeen beat Hibs. United currently have 53 points from 37 games, and would have secured their spot in Europe last week with a favourable result against Hearts. Unfortunately, Craig Levein’s men lost 3-0.

 

Early strikes from Lee Wallace and Bruno Aguiar put Hearts 2-0 ahead, and Eggert Jonsson added a third from the spot in the second half to condemn Dundee United to their 10^th loss of the season. Warren Feeney is still unavailable, but Francisco Sandaza is expected to recover from his hamstring problem.

 

Rangers currently lead Celtic by two points at the top of the table, but the trip to Tannadice is one they’d rather not make, given their away form against United in recent years. Walter Smith’s men have not won at Tannadice in nearly three years now, and with United also looking for a spot in Europe, Rangers will have their work cut out.

 

Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-1 last week in a game that marked Barry Ferguson’s first start since Boozegate. An own goal from Richard Foster and a Kyle Lafferty header was enough for Rangers to win. Gers also had Majid Bougherra sent off, but the SFA has rescinded the card, and the Algerian is free to play against Dundee United.
