After thirty rounds of fixtures in the league, AC Milan lead the pack with 62 points but Inter are breathing down their neck having collected 60 points from the same number of games. Third placed Napoli are also just a point behind Inter, meaning that the race for the title could really go down to the wire this season.
Milan collected only one point from a possible six in their last two Serie A fixtures. The Rossoneri drew 1-1 at home against Bari and then slumped to a shock defeat against Palermo away. The Sicilians won the tie 1-0 thanks to Dorin Goian’s early goal, thus giving their new manager Serse Cosmi his first win since taking over from Delio Rossi.
Milan were without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Palermo and lacked creativity upfront. It was a disappointing outing for the Rossoneri, especially given that Palermo have one of the worst defences in Serie A, with only relegation threatened Lecce conceding more goals than them.
Ibrahimovic is also suspended for the Milan derby and that could play into the hands of defending champions Internazionale. Inter edged out Lecce in their last league game a fortnight ago, with Giampaolo Pazzini’s goal seven minutes after the restart proving to be the difference between the two sides.
The previous league fixture between the two sides this season ended 1-0 in favour of AC Milan, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring the winner from the spot. The Rossoneri also ended the game with ten men following the dismissal of Ignazio Abate.

Inter were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Bari in their opening Serie A game. It wasn't exactly the winning start what Jose Mourinho wanted though. Inter dominated possession, but were unable to break down their opponents. Sulley Muntari was disappointing, and the introduction of Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma, who has never been able to bridge the gap between his talent and performances was on the pitch, at half time, was a bit surprising.
Samuel Eto'o scored on his Inter debut, converting a penalty on 56 minutes after striker partner Diego Milito had been fouled by Leonardo Bonucci in the Bari box. The visitors replied through Vitaly Kutuzov 18 minutes later, and held on for a precious point at the San Siro.
AC Milan got off to a winning start as they won 2-1 at Siena. Brazilian star Alexandre Pato scored a brace for the Rossoneri, who were without suspended striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Huntelaar is expected to make his league debut for Milan this weekend.
Both the goals were set up by Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho, who himself came very close to scoring with a scissor kick. Alessandro Nesta and new signing Thiago Silva were also excellent in defence, and one gets the feeling Milan might have finally found a solution to their defensive frailities.
This is the first time since the summer of 2006 that Milan are ahead of Inter in the Serie A table before a derby game.
