Milan finished third in Serie A behind Inter and Roma last season. The Rossoneri eventually ended up with 70 points from 38 fixtures, 12 less than champions and local rivals Inter.

The Rossoneri have had a mixed pre-season. They drew both their Emirates Cup games against Arsenal and Olympique Lyonnais in London and then beat Greek giants Panathinaikos 5-3 on penalties in Detroit. Milan were involved along with Juve and Inter in a three way showoff for the TIM trophy. The title went Inter’s way after they beat Milan 3-2 on penalties in the decisive game. Both teams had earlier defeated Juventus.

Milan’s major acquisitions this summer have been defender Mario Yepes and midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng. The former has arrived on a free transfer, while the latter has been loaned from Genoa. Another summer signing from Genoa is young Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos

Lecce earned promotion from Serie B after winning the Italian second division last season. The Salentini just about edged Cesena to the title, finishing with 75 points to the latter’s 74. Lecce will also be hoping that their Uruguayan duo of Carlos Grossmuller and Javier Chevanton can fire on all cylinders. Grossmuller had an impressive pre-season while Chevanton has reunited with his former club after six years. The latter was a huge fan favourite when he played for Lecce between 2001 and 2004. Both have been signed in the summer transfer window.

Milan are currently third in the table, a position coach Carlo Ancelotti must maintain if he is to stay at the San Siro next season. They are fourteen points behind leaders Inter, and seven behind second placed Juventus. Fourth placed Genoa are four points behind.

Milan’s challenge for the title race has been seriously affected by injuries, with the likes of Gennaro Gattuso, Christian Abbiati, Alessandro Nesta, Daniele Bonera, Kakhaber Kaladze and Marco Borriello all unavailable. The Rossoneri played out a boring 0-0 draw against Napoli in their last game. It could have been a lot worse had Marek Hamsik’s goal not been disallowed for offside and Marcelo Zalayeta been a bit more accurate with his finishing.

After being thrashed 5-2 by Palermo, Lecce recovered well to draw against Atalanta at home in their last game. Veteran Fabio Caserta smashed home an injury time penalty to get the Salentini a point after Atalanta defender Thomas Manfredini had handled the ball in his own area.

Caserta scored twice against Atalanta, and the midfielder has admitted that new coach Luigi di Canio has had some impact- especially in the attacking department. Lecce will be hoping that the international break works in their favour as several of Milan’s players will be feeling tired.

When the two teams met at the Stadio Via del Mare earlier this season, Lecce staged a great escape at the end to deny Milan a win. Defender Andrea Esposito was the hero for Lecce then, cancelling out Seedorf’s opener. Do not forget to watch AC Milan v Lecce live!!!
