Like title rivals and defending champions Internazionale, Roma also failed to kick off the new league season with a win. The Giallorossi had to be content with a point against Cesena at home in their opening fixture. Mirko Vucinic, Francesco Totti and Matteo Brighi all went close for Roma, but none of the three were able to break the deadlock at Stadio Olimpico.

Cagliari drew 0-0 with Palermo in an entertaining game at Stadio Renzo Barbera in their Serie A opener. Both goalkeepers had a fine day between the sticks. Cagliari stopper Michael Agazzi denied Massimo Maccarone, Abel Hernandez and Federico Balzaretti to keep his side in the fixture.

Cagliari has not exactly been the easiest place to visit for Roma over the years. The Giallorossi have not won there in fifteen years after their 2-0 win in October 1995. Four of the last five meetings between the two sides in Sardinia have ended in draws, with one going Cagliari’s way. Roma looked set to win against the Rossoblu in their last trip to Stadio Sant'Elia after taking a 2-0 lead, but late strikes from Daniele Conti and Diego Lopez earned Cagliari a surprise point.
