On Sunday, the Rossoneri avenged their 2-0 loss suffered at the hands of Cesena earlier this season by beating the Cavalucci Marini by the same scoreline. Maximiliano Pellegrino’s own goal in the second half gave AC Milan the lead and they confirmed victory when Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted deep into stoppage time to make it 2-0.

On Wednesday night, Milan beat Sampdoria 2-1 to book their spot in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia. Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato scored both of Milan’s goals at the Luigi Ferraris stadium that evening. Milan’s new Dutch duo of Urby Emanuelson and Mark Van Bommel made their debuts against Sampdoria in midweek and are expected to make their maiden league appearances for the Rossoneri this weekend.

New Catania boss Diego Simeone had a miserable start to his reign as manager of the club as they went down 2-0 to Parma last weekend. Second half efforts from Antonio Candreva and Sebastian Giovinco sealed Catania’s fate at Stadio Ennio Tardini. Catania did have their chances in the game, with Gaston Maxi Lopez, Giuseppe Mascara and Alejandro Gomez all going close for the visitors.

Catania have had a disappointing start to 2011, losing all but one of the five games they have contested this month. The fixture between Catania and Milan at the San Siro in September last year ended in a 1-1 draw, with Pippo Inzaghi cancelling out Ciro Capuano’s opener for Catania.

Catania drew 1-1 with local rivals Palermo last weekend, their second consecutive draw after a run of three defeats. The Sicilian outfit went behind to an early Giulio Migliaccio strike, but equalised in the 55th minute through Jorge Andres Martinez. The result saw Palermo manager Walter Zenga, hired from the Rosazzurri at the beginning of the season, sacked after the game.

Catania’s only win this season came against Cagliari in September. The Elefanti currently have nine points from thirteen games, and are three points away from safety. Milan beat Catania 2-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, with Kaka and Filippo Inzaghi scoring.

Milan were the only one of the Italian big three not to lose in the midweek Champions League games. Inter and Juventus were beaten by Barcelona and Bordeaux respectively, but Milan managed to pick up a point against Olympique Marseille at home.

The Rossoneri took the lead through Marco Borriello, but OM equalised just six minutes later through Lucho Gonzalez. Milan dominated possession in the second half, but Dida was the luckier keeper as Brandao and Souleymane Diawara both struck the post for Marseille.

Catania were beaten 2-1 by relegation threatened Lecce last week. Goals from Gianni Munari and Simone Tiribocchi gave the Salentini a 2-0 lead within the first twenty five minutes. Jorge Martinez did pull one back for Catania after half time, but Lecce held on for three vital points.

Young striker Vito Falconieri made his first team debut for Catania against Lecce, coming on as a second half substitute for the injured Alessandro Potenza. Fabio Sciacca is suspended for Catania after being sent off in the game against Lecce. The Rossazzurri currently have 40 points from 33 games.

Brazilian playmaker Kaka scored twice from the spot as Milan comfortably beat Palermo 3-0 last week. Veteran forward Filippo Inzaghi was also on target for the Rossoneri as they avenged their 3-1 defeat at Palermo in November 2008.

Milan are now seven points behind city rivals and league leaders Inter. Inter play on Saturday against Lazio, and should they lose, Milan could cut the gap to four with a win at the Stadio Angelo Massimino. Kaka scored the only goal of the game when Milan hosted Catania in December last year.
