Inter’s winless run in November continued as they went down 1-0 to Milan last weekend at the San Siro. Coach Rafa Benitez surprisingly opted to start with veteran Marco Materazzi in defence, probably to counter the aerial threat of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Colombian Ivan Cordoba was asked to play as right back instead of youngster Davide Santon.

However Benitez’s tactics did not exactly come off as Materazzi’s reckless challenge on Ibrahimovic lead to an early penalty for Milan which was gleefully converted by the tall Swede from the spot against his old side. Inter failed to conjure any major threats and slipped six points behind their rivals as a result of the defeat. Inter coach Massimo Moratti minced no words about the Nerazzurri’s performance, saying that it did not appear that his players were capable of winning the game at any stage of the fixture.

Chievo picked up their third 0-0 draw in the last four games as they shared points with out of form Sampdoria in their last game. The Flying Donkeys are just four points behind Inter going into this weekend’s round of fixtures. While Inter have 20 points from 12 games, Chievo have 16 to their name.

The last two fixtures between Inter and Chievo have both been won the former, albeit by narrow one goal margins on both occasions. The corresponding fixture last season was won 1-0 by the Nerazzurri thanks to an early goal from Mario Balotelli.

Inter Milan could end up winning the 2008-09 Serie A when they take on relegation threatened Chievo Verona at the Bentegodi stadium this weekend. A victory for Inter, along with a defeat for city rivals AC Milan, would see Jose Mourinho’s team lift the title for the second year running. Chievo are six points above the drop zone, a win against Inter will almost certainly guarantee a place for the Flying Donkeys in next season’s Serie A. Chievo’s last game was a hard fought stalemate against Roma. Skipper Sergio Pallissier had the best chance of the game for Chievo, who had Giampiero Pinzi sent off in the closing minutes of the game.

Pinzi will therefore miss this game, and so will Antonio Langella, who is also suspended. Manager Domenico di Carlo will also have to do without the services of the injured trio of Stephen Makinwa, Fabio Moro and Giuseppe Colucci.

Second half goals from Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari gave Inter a 2-0 win at home over Coppa Italia finalists Lazio last week. However Ibrahimovic did pick up a yellow in the game, and will have to watch this game from the sidelines.

Inter will however welcome Mario Balotelli back from suspension, and Mourinho is likely to start with him in Ibrahimovic’s absence. When Inter met Chievo at the San Siro earlier this season, the Nerazzuri ran out 4-2 winners thanks to Ibrahimovic’s late brace.
