AC Milan beat title rivals Internazionale 3-0 last weekend. The victory could not have come at a better time for the Rossoneri, who had picked up only a single point from a possible six prior to the Milan derby.

Milan took the lead early in the fixture against Inter through Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato, who netted in the first minute of the game. Gennaro Gattuso’s through ball was aimed at Robinho, but the ball eventually ended up at the feet of Pato, who was left with the easiest of finishes to complete.

Pato doubled Milan’s lead in the 62nd minute, nodding in Ignazio Abate’s cross. Substitute Antonio Cassano netted the third in the last minute from the game from the penalty spot. The spot kick was earned by Cassano himself after a foul by Inter skipper Javier Zanetti. Cassano’s late red card was the only negative point of the game for Milan, who now have a five point lead over the defending champions

Fiorentina drew 2-2 with Cesena last weekend. The Viola went behind when Luis Jimenez opened the scoring for Cesena but goals in either half from Alberto Gilardino and Riccardo Montolivo put them back on track. However Fabio Ceserta snatched a last gasp equaliser to give Cesena a share of the spoils.

The last meeting between the two sides in Florence saw Milan pick up a 2-1 win thanks to late goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Alexandre Pato after Alberto Gilardino had put Fiorentina ahead.

La Viola halted their run of four successive defeats in all competitions on Sunday when they beat Livorno 2-1 at home. Fiorentina were trailing 1-0 with half an hour left on the clock but first levelled through Juan Vargas on 62 minutes and then found a winner through striker Alberto Gilardino twelve minutes from time. It was their 10th Serie A win of the season.

Milan bounced back from their Champions League loss at the hands of Manchester United as they beat Bari 2-0 on Sunday night. Marco Borriello broke the deadlock shortly before half time with a volleyed effort. Brazilian Alexandre Pato doubled Milan’s lead on 69 minutes. The Rossoneri conceded a late penalty but Bari’s Paulo Vito Barretto was unable to convert the resultant spot kick.

Fiorentina were beaten 2-1 by Chievo last weekend as the Flying Donkeys took full advantage of the former’s European exertions. Riccardo Montolivo gave Fiorentina the lead in the 5th minute with an excellent strike from outside the box. Mario Santana’s original effort had been palmed away by the keeper and although Chievo got the ball out of the box, it went straight to Montolivo, whose angled effort proved to be unstoppable.

Chievo were on level terms seven minutes later when Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey failed to get to Elvis Abbruscato’s cross, leaving Giampiero Pinzi to make it 1-1 with a simple finish. Gennaro Sarda grabbed what was to be the winner, heading in a Luciano free kick in the 24th minute.

Milan had their five match winning streak halted by Palermo last weekend. Opposition keeper Fabrizio Miccoli scored the first goal of the game shortly after the break, collecting Mark Bresciano’s pass and beating Dida with a clean finish. Miccoli also set up the second goal, advancing from the left wing and passing it to Javier Pastore. Pastore’s first time effort hit a Milan defender, but Bresciano was quick to the ball and scored from close range to make it 2-0.

The result left Milan five points behind city rivals Internazionale, who will host Lazio a day later at the San Siro this weekend. Defender Thiago Silva, who was earlier supposed to be out of action till 2010, is in contention for an early return this weekend.

Fiorentina are assured of a top four finish in the league after their draw against Lecce last week. The Viola are three points behind Milan, and a win by a two goal margin could see Milan having to play the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. Juventus and Inter have picked up two of the three automatic spots, and Fiorentina could leapfrog Milan if they win at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday.

Fiorentina needed a point last week to end Genoa’s Champions League hopes, and they managed to get it thanks to Martin Jorgensen’s late strike. Jorgensen cancelled out Simone Tribocchi’s 50th minute strike to confirm a top four finish for Fiorentina and also send the Salentini down to Serie B. Fiorentina also had Felipe Melo sent off.

Paolo Maldini’s last appearance for AC Milan at the San Siro ended in a loss as Roma beat the Rossoneri 3-2. It was Milan’s second consecutive loss in the league, coming on the back of a 2-1 loss in Udine the week before.

Norwegian left back John Arne Riise gave Roma the lead at the San Siro, but Massimo Ambrosini equalised for Milan with fifteen minutes on the clock. Jeremy Menez’s 80th minute strike was almost immediately cancelled out by another Ambrosini goal, but Roma skipper Francesco Totti had the final say with a well taken free kick. Ambrosini was sent off minutes after Totti had scored the winner.
