Roma beat Lazio 2-0 last weekend to cut the gap between themselves and the Biancocelesti to two points. The Giallorossi went ahead in the 70^th minute of the game through Francesco Totti. The talismanic forward lashed in an excellent free kick from 30 yards out to put his side ahead.

Totti also scored the second of the game from the spot late in the game to seal victory for Roma. The penalty was awarded after Lazio’s Giuseppe Biava had fouled Fabio Simplicio in the area. Lazio ended the fixture with nine men following red cards to Stefan Radu and Cristian Ledesma.

Fiorentina continued their charge towards Europe by edging out Chievo Verona 1-0 last weekend. A free kick from Juan Vargas, scored three minutes into the second half, was the difference between the two sides at the final whistle. Stefano Sorrentino almost grabbed an undeserved point for Chievo towards the end of the game, but Fiorentina’s Polish stopper Artur Boruc produced a stunning save to keep the Viola ahead.

Only nine points separate Fiorentina from Roma in the league table going into this fixture. Roma however do hold the edge in head to head fixtures, having beaten the Viola in the last three meetings between the two sides. For Fiorentina, Alberto Gilardino has netted in three of his side’s last four games against the Giallorossi.
