The Biancocelesti strengthened their hold on fourth spot with a convincing 4-1 victory over Catania last weekend. Just before the interval, Lazio took the lead when midfielder Stephan Liechsteiner crossed into the box for Stefano Mauri, whose headed pass fell into the path of Hernanes to tap in from close range.
Ezequiel Schelotto responded immediately for Catania, but Mauri put Lazio back in front, applying the finishing touch to an excellent bit of work from substitute Mauro Zarate.
In the 78th minute, Zarate was in the thick of action again, this time squaring for Sergio Floccari to prod into an empty net. The Argentine then got on the score sheet himself as he curled in a wonderful free kick with a minute left on the clock.
Inter’s title ambitions took a huge hit as they went down 2-0 to Parma last weekend. Goals in either half from Sebastian Giovinco and Amauri saw Parma beat an erratic Inter side 2-0 at the San Siro. The result saw the Nerazzurri drop eight points behind city rivals Milan, a gap that looks improbable to close given there are only five games left in the season. Inter however did manage to beat rivals Roma 1-0 in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia on Tuesday night thanks to a solitary goal from Serbian stalwart Dejan Stankovic.

Inter drew 1-1 with Atalanta last weekend. Argentine striker Diego Milito put Inter ahead after a quarter of an hour, but Atalanta snatched a point when Simone Tiribocchi equalised in the 81st minute. Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder was sent off during the game, and the Dutch playmaker is therefore suspended for this weekend’s game against Lazio.
Sneijder scored the only goal of the match when Inter met Livorno in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday night. He curled home a wonderful free kick in the 16th minute of the game after Livorno’s Nelson Rivas had been penalised for handball. The result allowed Inter to progress to the last eight of the competition. Francesco Toldo made his first appearance of the season in goal for Inter against Livorno, but the gloves should be handed back to Julio Cesar this weekend.
Lazio beat Genoa 1-0 last weekend for only their third win of the season. Alexsander Kolarov’s 39th minute strike was enough for the Biancocelesti to overcome Genoa, who played for nearly half an hour with ten men after Salvatore Bochetti was sent off in the second half.
Roberto Baronio and Stefano Mauri, both of whom missed the Genoa game through suspension, will again be available for selection. However Lazio coach Davide Ballardini will have to do without the services of prolific striker Mauro Zarate, who will serve his one match ban this weekend.

After a shock loss to Napoli that gave their Scudetto rivals a glimmer of hope, Inter Milan host Lazio this weekend at the San Siro. Inter’s defeat against Napoli did come as a surprise to many, and it reduced the Nerazzurri’s lead at the top to seven points. Uruguayan striker Marcelo Zalayeta scored the only goal of the game to hand former Italy boss Roberto Donadoni his first win as Napoli manager.
Striker Mario Balotelli is suspended. Inter boss Jose Mourinho will also have to do without the services of Dejan Stankovic, wing back Maicon, Mancini, Luis Jimenez and Nelson Rivas.
Like Inter, Lazio suffered a shock defeat at home to Atalanta last week. The men from the Eternal City had been in great form prior to the game, beating Roma, Genoa and Juventus, but were unable to beat mid table Atalanta. Former Lazio defender Jose Leonardo Talamonti scored the winner for the Bergamaschi as the visitors won for the first time in five games.
Delio Rossi’s men clearly missed Macedonian forward Goran Pandev against Atalanta. They are five points behind bitter rivals Roma, who hold the last Europa League spot. Lazio could qualify for Europe if they beat Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia final, but coach Rossi has said that he wants his boys to qualify from the league.
If Lazio play as well as they did against Juventus in the second leg of the Coppa Italia, Inter will be given a run for their money. Sign up today to watch Internazionale v Lazio live on your computer.
