Inter were beaten 3-1 by Udinese last weekend. The result halted the march of the Nerazzurri up the table and left them nine points behind city rivals Milan with a game in hand.

Ezequiel Lavezzi missed the decisive spot kick for Napoli.

Palermo also triumphed on penalties in their midweek Coppa Italia fixture against Parma. The fixture ended goalless in normal time and went to spot kicks, where Palermo triumphed 5-4. The Sicilians also beat Brescia 1-0 in Serie A last weekend. Cesare Bovo scored the winner in the 86^th minute from a well taken free kick after Javier Pastore had been fouled.

The results have propelled the Sicilian outfit to fourth in the table, ahead of more fancied teams like Napoli, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Udinese.

Palermo’s last game was against Udinese, which they won 1-0 thanks to Cesare Bovo’s 87^th minute strike. Both of Palermo’s losses have come away from the Renzo Barbera, and Inter will be hoping to use this to their advantage.

Inter recorded a somewhat fortuitous win over Udinese last week. They needed an own goal from Udinese defender Mauricio Isla to seal their fourth successive Serie A win. Udinese had more chances than their opponents, but failed to make them count. The win, along with Juventus’ draw against Chievo, increased Inter’s lead at the top to nine points.

Brazilian striker Adriano stunned the Nerazzurri by choosing to remain at home after the World Cup qualifiers. Palermo boosted their chances of European qualification with a narrow 1-0 win over Torino last week. Edison Cavani scored the winner five minutes into the second half, heading home Fabio Simplicio’s cross from the right. Cavani had also scored twice in Palermo’s previous win over troubled Lecce.

Palermo are four points behind AS Roma, who currently hold the final European spot. After Inter, the Rosanero face Bologna, followed by a meeting with Inter’s bitter rivals, AC Milan.
