Inter could only draw their 10/11 Serie A opener 0-0 against Bologna- a disappointing result that came right on the heels of a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. The Nerazzurri only came to life in the last quarter of the game against Bologna, but were unable to find a way past opposition keeper Emiliano Viviano, who had a splendid day in goal for the home side.
Udinese also suffered disappointment in the opening round of fixtures as they lost 1-0 at Stadio Friuli to Genoa. Rossoblu forward Giandomenico Mesto netted the winner in the 81st minute of the game- an acrobatic overhead kick that beat Samir Handanovic in the Udinese goal.
The last four meetings between Inter and Udinese have all gone the way of the Nerazzurri. In Udinese’s last trip to the San Siro, Inter prevailed 2-1. Wesley Sneijder netted a dramatic late winner after Dejan Stankovic’s opener had been cancelled out by Udinese’s Antonio di Natale. For the Friulian side’s last away win over Inter in the league, one has to turn the clock all the way back to February 2004, when the Bianconeri grabbed a famous 2-1 victory.

Inter drew with Russian champions Rubin Kazan in their midweek Champions League game. Kazan took the lead through Alejandro Dominiguez in the 11th minute, but Inter equalised sixteen minutes later through midfielder Dejan Stankovic.
Brazilian wing back Maicon produced another good run down the right hand side, and crossed into the box. Rubin’s defenders had the two Inter players already present in the box covered, but they failed to notice the advancing Stankovic, who was allowed a free header. Inter were playing with Mario Balotelli and Samuel Eto’o upfront after Diego Milito pulled out citing muscle fatigue. Balotelli was sent off during the game, which made Inter play for nearly half an hour with ten men.
While Inter lost 1-0 to Sampdoria last week, Udinese picked up their third win in four games as they beat Genoa 2-0 at home. Antonio Di Natale opened the scoring for Udinese with his eighth goal of the season, and Simone Pepe made sure of all three points with his 88th minute effort.
There will be some fatigue in the Inter camp as they return from Russia. Udinese have no such issues as they are not taking part in European competition. Winger Simone Pepe has however urged his side to give it their all in Milan, saying that even a small mistake could cost them dearly.
Inter did the double over Udinese last season, winning both games 1-0. The home leg needed a late goal from veteran Argentine forward Julio Cruz to settle the issue. A string of draws have seen Milan slip down the Seria A table and they currently lie third in the table, a point below fierce rivals AC Milan. However, the biggest issue for Inter Milan will be the off-field problems between coach Jose Mourinho and Adriano. The out of control Brazilian has been the focal point of a lot of disputes in recent times as his drinking and partying habits have not found a chord with Inter Milan. The burly Brazilian’s absence meant a lack of goals up front for Inter, something which they managed to overcome in their 3-2 draw last time around against Fiorentina.
Udinese on the other hand, have made a flying start to the season and are second in the table with twenty one points from ten matches, a creditable tally for the South Italian club. Udinese could have gone clear at the top had it not been for a 1-1 draw against Genoa last time around and they will be hoping to set their title credentials clear when they take the field away at mighty Inter in the weekend round of matches in the Italian Seria A.
