Lazio heaped more pressure on Rafa Benitez as they beat the defending champions 3-1 at home in Round 15. The Biancocelesti took the lead when Esteban Cambiasso’s attempted goal line clearance richochetted off Giuseppe Biava into the Inter goal. Lazio doubled their advantage on 52 minutes through Mauro Zarate. The Argentine striker took advantage of some sloppy defending from Felice Natalino to slot the ball over the advancing Julio Cesar.

Goran Pandev pulled one back for Inter Milan in the 74th minute and the Nerazzurri then exerted pressure as they started to push for the equaliser. However Hernanes’ superb free kick in the 89th minute sealed the issue as Lazio ran out 3-1 winners.

Juventus made up for the disappointment of not being able to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Europa League by beating Catania 3-1 last weekend. Simone Pepe put Juventus ahead in the 35th minute when he converted Vincenzo Iaquinta’s cross. Takayuki Morimoto brought Catania level just a minute later but Juventus went back ahead through Fabio Quaglirella in the 44th minute, with Iaquinta again the creator.

Quaglirella confirmed victory for Juventus when he capitalised on a poor pass from Christian Terlizzi before smashing home from 18 yards out. The win was Juventus’ seventh of the season and took them to 27 points from fourteen games.

The Bianconeri were beaten 2-1 by AS Roma last Saturday and were dumped out of the Coppa Italia by league leaders Internazionale on Thursday evening. In both the games, Juve took the lead, but were unable to hold on to it.

Against Inter, Juventus took the lead through Diego. We saw another glimpse of new signing Antonio Candreva, who had made his debut for the Old Lady against Roma. Midfielder Felipe Melo was lucky not to give away a penalty for handling the ball as Juve lead 1-0 at half time. Just as it seemed that Ciro Ferrara would get a much required win, Inter equalised through Lucio and then completed their comeback when Mario Balotelli struck a late winner.

Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon and defender Fabio Grosso are both unavailable as they are serving one match bans. Lazio do not have any suspension issues and will also have defender Stefan Radu back in their lineup. Radu missed Lazio’s 1-1 draw against Chievo Verona through suspension.

Lazio coach Davide Ballardini brought Julio Cruz back into his starting lineup against Chievo and the move reaped rich dividends when the Argentine hitman set up Guglielmo Stendardo for the game’s opening goal. Lazio keeper Fernando Muslera saved from Mario Yepes and Sergio Pellissier but he was finally breached 13 minutes from time when Pellissier fired home from close range.

After ending their seven game winless run with a win over Siena, Juventus face Lazio in their final game of the season. The Bianconeri have guaranteed themselves a spot in the group stages of next season’s Champions League, and can seal a second place finish with a win at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

The match against Siena was Ciro Ferrara’s first in charge of the Old Lady, and the visitors won 3-0 thanks to a brace from Alessandro Del Piero, which included a fabulous free kick. Claudio Marchisio was the scorer of the other goal for Juventus.

With the win, Juventus sealed an automatic Champions League spot. Fiorentina, who are in fourth, cannot overtake Juve because the Bianconeri have a better head to head record. Juventus also announced the signing of playmaker Diego from Werder Bremen as they aim to reclaim the Scudetto next season.

Lazio beat Reggina 1-0 last week to send the Amaranto down after six years in the top flight. Argentine striker Mauro Zarate scored the winner for the Biancocelesti in the 26th minute after directing Ousmane Dabo’s ball past Reggina keeper Christian Puggioni. It was Lazio’s first win in five games, halting a four game losing streak.

Thanks to their win in the Coppa Italia, Lazio are already assured of European football next season. They are currently 10th in the table with 50 points from 37 games, but could slip into the bottom half if they lose to Juventus and Atalanta beat Inter Milan.

Lazio drew 1-1 with Juventus when the two teams met in January in the league. Most recently, Delio Rossi’s team beat the Bianconeri 4-2 on aggregate in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia.
