Juventus let slip a two goal lead with just ten minutes left on the clock against Catania last weekend. The Bianconeri went ahead on 19 minutes through an Alessandro Del Piero penalty after Catania’s Pablo Alvarez had handled the ball in his own box.
Juventus were however somewhat fortunate with their second goal that arrived seven minutes before the interval. It was also scored by Del Piero, following Matias Silvestre’s failure to clear a cross from Serbian winger Milos Krasic. Alejandro Gomez then gave Catania a glimmer of hope by pulling one back in the 81st minute.
Catania left holes in the back as they surged forward for the equaliser, thereby giving Juventus two opportunities to kill the game off, but the latter were unable to do so. The Bianconeri were punished for their profligacy when Francesco Lodi scored with the last kick of the game to level the scores.
Lazio lost 2-1 to defending champions Inter Milan last weekend. The result kept the Biancocelesti’s chances of European football in the balance as they were not able to take advantage of Udinese’s slip up against Parma.
Against Inter, striker Mauro Zarate scored Lazio’s only goal of the game. Stefano Mauri was sent off during the fixture and the midfielder is ineligible for Juventus’ trip to the Eternal City on Monday evening. Seven points separate Lazio from Juve in the league table going into this Round 35 fixture.

Juventus, who started off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Chievo, outclassed Roma last week. Brazilian playmaker Diego gave the Bianconeri the lead on 24 minutes, but Roma equalised through a stunning Daniele De Rossi effort. However Juve had more possession and given the number of number of times Julio Sergio was tested in the Roma goal, it was only a matter of time before they regained the lead.
Diego was the provider of the second goal, and fellow Brazilian Felipe Melo capped a wonderful debut when he scored the third. The result forced Roma coach Luciano Spalletti to hand in his papers after five years in charge of the Giallorossi.
Lazio beat Chievo 2-1 in their last Serie A game to pick up their second win in a row. Chievo took the lead through a 16th minute strike from captain Sergio Pellissier, but Lazio hit back just before the interval through Julio Cruz.
Cruz scored his second on the other side of the interval as the Biancocelesti emerged 2-1 winners. However Lazio will be without defender Emilson Cribari, who was sent off in the game against Chievo. Coach Davide Ballardini is also having an injury crisis in midfield, with Roberto Baronio joining Cristian Brocchi on the sidelines.
Last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a 1-1 draw. “Rebel” midfielder Cristian Ledesma scored for Lazio in that game, while Swedish defender Olof Mellberg netted for Juventus. Juventus have been in inspired form in recent times and have closed the gap atop the Seria A table to just four points. The Bianconeri come into this clash on the back of a 1-0 victory over Siena last time around courtesy of a brilliant Del Piero freekick. The Juventus skipper is in the best form of his life at the ripe age of 34 and with David Trezeguet back from injury, Juve look good enough to challenge Inter all the way. However, their away form has remained a huge concern and they will be eager to clear the challenge of Lazio this weekend in the biggest clash of 2009 for Juventus.
Lazio on the other hand, have lost ground in recent months after a brilliant start to the season and while the likes of Zarate and Pandev are still banging in the goals, their midfield looks lacklustre going into this tough fixture at home. However, Lazio will take heart from their recent success against Juventus and will hope that home advantage will play into their hands as Juventus make the trip away to the capital.
