Four points separate Napoli from Inter in the league table going into this weekend’s round of fixtures in Serie A. The Partenopei have picked up 68 points from 36 fixtures, while Inter have 72 from the same number of games. The title has already been clinched by AC Milan, leaving Inter and Napoli to fight out for the runners up spot.

Inter comfortably beat Fiorentina 3-1 in the league last weekend. The Nerazzurri raced to a 2-0 lead by half time thanks to goals from Giampaolo Pazzini and Esteban Cambiasso. Alberto Gilardino raised brief hopes of a Fiorentina comeback with his 74^th minute strike, but the hopes of the Viola were crushed two minutes later when Philippe Coutinho struck a fabulous free kick to restore Inter’s two goal lead.

Napoli suffered a shock loss to US Lecce last weekend. Daniel Corvia gave Lecce the lead early in the second half from the penalty spot, but the forward turned villain just five minutes later when he was sent off. Giuseppe Mascara then equalised for Napoli, who too were reduced to ten men when Edinson Cavani received his marching orders sixteen minutes from time. Javier Chevanton then struck a controversial winner two minutes from time as Lecce picked up three priceless points in their quest for survival.

The Partenopei suffered their first league defeat since October when Udinese beat them 3-1 last week. The match seemed to be heading for a draw after Napoli’s Christian Maggio had cancelled out Antonio Di Natale’s early opener for Udinese. However Di Natale struck twice in second half injury time to give Udinese a much needed win.

Inter drew 1-1 with Parma on Wednesday night. Both the goals came in the second half and Parma managed to keep the score at 1-1 despite the dismissal of Francesco Valiani eighteen minutes from time. Substitute Mario Balotelli’s scored the Nerazzurri’s only goal of the game.

Napoli put in a very ordinary performance as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Cagliari last week. It was also Roberto Donadoni’s first defeat as Napoli manager. His first four games had ended in draws. Capucio Jeda and Andrea Lazzari scored for Cagliari as the Rossoblu continued to push for a European berth.

Donadoni was visibly upset after the game and rued his side’s inability to take advantage of the goal scoring opportunities presented to them. Napoli were surprise 1-0 winners over Inter when the two sides met in March 2008 at the Stadio San Paolo. Marcelo Zalayeta scored the winner for the Partenopei, and Napoli could even afford a late penalty miss as they handed Inter their first defeat of the season. Inter were surprisingly poor in that game, and Jose Mourinho will certainly like to avoid a repeat of that performance.
