Roma ran Inter close all of last season, but eventually had to settle for second place in the league behind the Nerazzurri. The Giallorossi had a dreadful start to the 09/10 season, leading to Luciano Spalletti putting in his papers after just two games. However his replacement Claudio Ranieri turned things around and the Giallorossi eventually finished just two points behind Inter. They ended up with 80 points to Inter’s 82.

Ranieri has strengthened his squad with several new signings this summer. He has captured Aleandro Rosi and Guillermo Burdisso, both defenders, on loan. Fabio Simplicio and Ahmed Barusso have been brought in to reinforce midfield. Ranieri has also signed former Inter striker Adriano from Flamengo on a three year contract.

Roma are the only major team playing on Saturday. Milan and Juventus both open their campaigns on Sunday, while Inter, due to their UEFA Super Cup clash against Atletico Madrid, will be seen in action on Monday away at Bologna.

Cesena are returning to the Italian top flight after a gap of nearly two decades. They finished runners up to Lecce in Serie B last season. Prior to the 10/11 season, Cesena were last seen in Serie A in 1991. The Seahorses have also made a string of impressive signings as they aim to preserve their top flight status- Stephen Appiah, Steve von Bergen, Erjon Bogdani and Diego Cavalieri have all checked in this summer at Stadio Dino Manuzzi.
