Roma went to Ukraine trying to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg but instead slumped to a comprehensive defeat as Shakhtar ran out 6-2 winners on aggregate. It was a forgettable European managerial debut for new Roma manager Vincenzo Montella, who had claimed before the match that the Giallorossi would be able to see off Shakhtar.

To Montella’s credit, Roma did start the better of the two sides, but an early goal from Tomas Hubschman, coupled with a horrible penalty miss from Marco Borriello and a red card for French defender Philippe Mexes, put paid to the Giallorossi’s hopes. Shakhtar eventually added two more goals after the interval to win the tie 3-0.

Roma narrowly won their league fixture against Lecce last weekend. Mirko Vucinic’s first half opener for Roma was cancelled out by Guillermo Giacomazzi, but midfield playmaker David Pizarro converted a last gasp penalty to give the visitors all three points at the Stadio Via del Mare.

Lazio bounced back from their their loss at Cagliari to beat Palermo 2-0 at the Olimpico last weekend. Giuseppe Sculli netted twice in the opening twenty minutes of the fixture as the Biancocelesti strolled to a comfortable 2-0 victory. Going into this fixture, Lazio are five points ahead of Roma in the league table.
