Sampdoria handed Lecce their first home defeat of the 10/11 Serie A season as they beat the Apulian outfit 3-2 in a five goal thriller. Sampdoria took the lead through Giampaolo Pazzini in the 8th minute and doubled their advantage through the same player in the 40th minute. Pazzini converted a spot kick after Guido Marilungo had been hacked down by Carlos Grossmuller in the box.

However Lecce did not give up despite being reduced to ten men and to their credit, the home side fought back to level the game. Their first goal of the game came through David di Michele while the equaliser arrived from the head of Malian substitute Souleymane Diamoutene. However Pazzini had the last say as he grabbed his hat trick and the winner for the visitors two minutes from time.

AC Milan beat Fiorentina by a solitary goal last Saturday. The winner, an overhead kick, was scored by in form Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the stroke of half time. Alessandro Nesta had the next best chance of the game for the Rossoneri but the defender failed to make the most of a free header from eight yards out. The win took Milan to 29 points from 13 games, three ahead of second placed Lazio. Sampdoria are in eighth place with 19 points from the same number of fixtures.

Sampdoria beat local rivals Genoa 1-0 last weekend. Prolific forward Antonio Cassano scored the winner midway through the first half to break Genoa’s three match winning record in the Genovese derby. The goal came when Stefano Lucchini headed Angelo Palombo’s free kick into the path of Cassano, who emerged victorious in his battle with Genoa defender Emiliano Moretti. Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini are both a card away from a one match ban.

Milan failed to capitalise on Inter Milan’s slipup last weekend as they could only draw against Catania. Marco Borriello’s second half brace spared the Rossoneri the blushes after goals from Maxi and Adrian Ricchiuti had put Catania in the drivers’ seat at the lemon break. Milan are currently four points behind leaders Roma going into this weekend’s round of fixtures.

Sampdoria rested numerous players for the midweek UEFA Cup clash against Ukrainian side FC Metalist Kharkiv and soon regretted it after the Ukrainian side stunned the Italians with a 3-0 win on aggregate and a comfortable 2-0 home win on the night for Metalist. The Blucerchiati had been favourites for the game despite finishing third in the UEFA Cup qualification group whilst Metalist finished top, ahead of top clubs such as Hertha Berlin, Benfica, Olympiacos and Galatasaray.

Sampdoria are struggling in this year’s Serie A and are in need of a few valuable points that will lift them into safety from relegation this year, although they are unbeaten in 5 games including ties against Juventus and Lazio.

AC Milan were also sent crashing out of the UEFA Cup this week at the hands of Werder Bremen, stunning the San Siro as well as the majority of staff and players. The sides drew 1-1 in the first leg at Bremen, before Andrea Pirlo and Alexandre Pato sent the Serie A giants into the lead before half-time. The game seemed under wraps until Claudio Pizarro netted a brace in the 68th and 78th minute to send Bremen through on the away goal rule.

Victory on the weekend could see Milan move above Juventus in the table to second place should Juve lost against Napoli on the weekend. Carlo Ancelotti’s side has already admitted defeat in catching Internazionale for the title this year, but will still look to improve on last year’s poor 5th place finish.
