The last five meetings between Inter and Udinese have all gone the way of the former. This five game winning run started for the Beneamata in early 2008 after the two teams had drawn five consecutive games in a span of roughly two years between 2006 and 2008.

Inter beat Cesena 3-2 in their midweek tie as manager Leonardo’s winning run in charge of the Nerazzurri continued. From mid table obscurity, the defending champions have now risen to fourth, six points behind leaders and city rivals Milan, but with one extra game in hand.

Inter went 2-0 up within the first quarter of an hour against Cesena thanks to goals from Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito. The visitors however struck twice in quick succession through Erjon Bogdani and Emanuele Giaccherini to level the scores at 2-2. Inter though had the last laugh as Romanian international Cristian Chivu nodded in a cross from Brazilian full back Maicon on the stroke of half time to net the winner.

Udinese were eliminated from the Coppa Italia on Wednesday night by Sampdoria. The Bianconeri drew 2-2 with the Blucerchiati at the end of extra time, but lost 5-4 on penalties as German Denis and Mauricio Isla fluffed their lines from 12 yards out. Denis and Isla, coincidentally enough, were the scorers of the two goals for Udinese before the game went to spot kicks.

Pasquale Marino enjoyed a successful homecoming as Udinese beat Cagliari 2-1 last weekend. The Bianconeri went behind in the third minute when Jeda put Cagliari ahead but managed to win 2-1 thanks to second half strikes from Alexis Sanchez and Antonio Di Natale. The result allowed Udinese to get some breathing space in the bottom half of the table as they moved four points clear of the relegation zone.

The Bianconeri are currently 13^th in the table with 36 points, ahead of Sampdoria on goal difference. A crucial last eight tie against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup is up next after this, and Pasquale Marino will be fully aware of that fact. However the Friulian club will be without leading goal scorer Antonio Di Natale, who damaged his knee ligaments in Italy’s 2-0 win over Montenegro last week.

Udinese lost 2-0 to Champions League chasing Genoa in their last Serie A game. Despite having just come back from an exhausting trip to Russia, the Bianconeri gave it their all, and could have even won the game had luck been on their side. Forward Alexis Sanchez, who was sent off against Genoa, is suspended for this game, and will join Maurizio Domizzi on the sidelines.

League leaders Inter are seven points clear of Juventus in the league and comfortably beat Reggina 3-0 last week. Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled Inter’s lead four minutes later from the spot. Ibrahimovic scored his second and Inter’s third with a delightful chip just before the hour mark.

Inter will be missing their influential Brazilian right back Maicon, who suffered a leg injury in his country’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador. Mourinho will probably ask veteran Javier Zanetti to move back from midfield, but another option is exciting youngster Davide Santon, who currently plays on the left.
