Azerbaijan were at the bottom of Group 4 prior to Saturday’s game against Liechtenstein in Vaduz, but Berti Vogts’ side have now climbed up one place thanks to their 2-0 win. Vagif Javadov and Elvin Mammadov scored for the Azeris in Vaduz as they picked up their first win in Group 4.
Azerbaijan were without Inter Baku defender Sammir Abbasov who missed the trip to Vaduz through suspension. Liechtenstein were without eight first team regulars, but could have easily drawn level had their finishing been much better.
Russia slumped to their first home defeat in qualifying as they were beaten 1-0 by Germany on Saturday. Miroslav Klose scored the only goal of the game on 35 minutes as Germany established an unassailable four point lead at the top of Group 4.
Russia had their chances to draw level, and laid siege to the German goal in the second half. However German keeper Rene Adler produced a string of good saves to deny the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Alexsandr Kerzhakov and Yuri Zhirkov. Germany played the last quarter of the game with ten men after Jerome Boateng was sent off, but somehow managed to hold on to their one goal advantage.
Goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Konstantin Zyryanov gave Russia a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan when the two teams met in Moscow in March 2009. Sign up today and watch Azerbaijan vs Russia online as it happens.
