Brazil were stunned 2-1 by lowly Bolivia in La Paz. It was only Brazil’s second defeat in qualifying, and also ensured that Bolivia would not be overtaken by bottom placed Peru in the points table. Edgar Olivares put Bolivia ahead with his first goal in qualifying, nodding in a Juan Carlos Arce corner at the near post.
Marcelo Martins scored his seventh goal in qualifying with an absolutely beautiful free kick. Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar did not move an inch as the ball sailed past his wall and into the roof of his net. However Brazil did manage to pull one back in the second half. Brazilian skipper Maicon intercepted Arce’s cross into the Brazilian box and the visitors attacked Bolivia on the counter. Maicon ran from one end of the pitch to the other, and crossed for Nilmar to head in Brazil’s only goal of the game.
Venezuela did not do their chances of qualification any good as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Paraguay at home. Both the Paraguay goals were scored in similar fashion. Cabanas netted the first on 55 minutes, while the prolific Oscar Cardozo scored the second eleven minutes from time.
Nicklas Fedor missed a penalty for Venezuela, but they did manage to reduce the margin of defeat as Alexander Rondon converted Juan Arango’s cross a few minutes later. For all practical purposes, the defeat ended Venezuela’s chances of making it to South Africa.
If Brazil beat Venezuela, they will end up as winners of the South American group round. Sign up today and watch Brazil vs Venezuela and other World Cup qualifiers live.
