With three qualifying games left, the Czech Republic are in a very precarious position insofar as qualification is concerned. Presently they sit in fifth position (second last) in the group table with nine points, seven behind leaders Slovakia and five behind second placed Northern Ireland. On Saturday the Czechs travelled to Bratislava for a “derby” match against group leaders Slovakia, and despite falling behind twice in the score, managed to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to an 84^th minute goal from Milan Baros which kept alive their slim hopes of qualification. The match itself didn’t spark into life until the second half, as half time found the teams deadlocked at 0-0. In fact, the scoring wasn’t opened until the sixtieth minute when the Slovak’s went ahead. The Czech’s equalised eight minutes later but Slovakia restored their lead on 73 minutes with a converted penalty. Baros made sure honours were even with his equaliser for the Czech Republic.

For their part, San Marino come into the game both winless and pointless and are living up to their reputation as Europe’s whipping boys. They didn’t have a game at the weekend but their last three games prior to that in qualifying were all away from home and read Poland-San Marino 10-0, Slovakia- San Marino 7-0 and Slovenia-San Marino 5-0!
