The 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying games continue this coming weekend, and in Group Nine England U21 host Portugal U21 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. Stuart Pearce’s England U21 side take to the field against their Portuguese counterparts this coming Saturday sitting second in the Group Nine table, six points behind current leaders Greece, who, though, have two games more than the English team. With two wins and a draw (away to Greece) in their first three games, England will feel they are in a very good position to qualify from the group as winners, although they have to start by winning Saturday’s game against Portugal, which will not be an easy task.

Group Nine qualifying for England U21’s started on September 4^th when they travelled to Macedonia. They beat the hosts by 2-1 in this opening game, starting off qualifying in the best possible frame of mind, especially having just come from the disappointment of losing 4-0 to Germany in the final of Euro 2009 which took place in Sweden over the summer.

In the second game of the group, they again had to travel, this time to Greece, where they gallantly held the home side to a 1-1 draw in what could turn out to be a pivotal result. Their third game was a home match against Macedonia at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in October in which they won comfortably by 6-3.

For their part, Portugal U21 come into the game sitting in third position of the group with four points from three games. Last time out they drew 1-1 away to Macedonia.
