Sergei Nazarenko scored the only goal of the game as Ukraine handed Fabio Capello his first competitive defeat as England manager on Saturday. The Three Lions had Robert Green sent off early in the game after a horrendous piece of defending from Rio Ferdinand. Green is therefore suspended for the Belarus game, and his replacement against Ukraine, David James, should continue in goal at Wembley.
However there were some positives to take from the game- especially the form of Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United forward showed plenty of energy as he ran back to help his defenders on several occasions. Captain John Terry did a stellar job at the back to compensate for partner Ferdinand having a bad day. Capello might just consider giving Matthew Upson or Gary Cahill a start at Wembley on Wednesday after seeing Ferdinand’s poor form on Saturday.
Belarus crushed Kazakhstan 4-0 on Saturday to take their points tally to thirteen from nine games. Maksim Bardachov opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, while Timofei Kalachev made it 2-0 on 69 minutes. Leonid Kovel added a third four minutes from time, and Kalachev made it 4-0 with his injury time strike.
Belarus will be without skipper Aliaksandr Hleb- a player coach Bernd Stange has said his team will miss a lot. Hleb is arguably Belarus’ best player, and had he been available for more games, the national side could well have put up a more effective challenge to Croatia and Ukraine in Group 6.
