Trappatoni and his Irish team had high hopes for the game on Saturday which took place in front of nearly 75,000 fans at Croke Park in Dublin. As things panned out though, the Irish were second best throughout the contest and can have no complaints about the 1-0 defeat they did eventually suffer.

French coach Raymond Domenech had himself been under severe pressure because of France’s less than satisfactory qualifying campaign, and hence their involvement in the qualifying stage, so the eyes of his nation were on him during the game. He needn’t have worried on the night though, as his France side dominated the Irish right from the word go. The only surprise was that it took the French so long to score their goal – seventy-two minutes.

The goal was a scrappy affair and was eventually credited to Nicholas Anelka, but the ball did take a hefty deflection of an Irish defender before wrong-footing keeper Shay Given and ending up in the back of the net.

Whereas France will feel quietly confident ahead of the second leg in Paris this coming Wednesday, The Irish will feel as though they will have an uphill battle to get anything out of the match. Trappatoni will have to lift his players before the match because they are bound to be a bit deflated after Saturday’s encounter.
