Germany were without a game on Saturday evening, so this gave second placed Russia the chance to close the gap to just one point after their 3-0 home win against Liechtenstein. With three games left in the group, things are tightening up at the top in the scramble for automatic qualification, and technically even third placed Finland are still in the hunt, although they are six points behind Germany at the moment.
The Germans last game in the group was the reverse fixture of Wednesday evening’s game when they travelled to Baku and beat the Azerbaijanis 2-0. Joachim Low’s team have not suffered defeat yet in their seven qualifying games, with their only blemish coming from a 3-3 away draw at Finland in September of 2008.
After Wednesday evenings home game, the Germany team face two rather difficult matches. They travel to Moscow to face Russia on the artificial pitch on 10th October and then face Finland at home four days later.
For their part, Azerbaijan lost at home to Finland by 2-1 on Saturday evening and therefore keep sharing bottom spot in the group table on one point with Liechtenstein, only above them on goal difference. Their solitary point came unsurprisingly from a 0-0 draw against their fellow strugglers. The game on October 10th between the two nations will give them their only chance of acquiring any more points in this year’s qualifying.
