The Republic played their qualifying games in Group Eight of the competition and made a good fist of pushing Italy all the way. In the end the Italians proved to be the strongest and lasted the pace until the very end, winning the group with 24 points to the Irish’s 18. What let the Irish side down was the amount of draws they had – six in total. Although they, as well as Italy, didn’t lose a match in qualifying, they only managed four wins as opposed to the Italian’s seven.
Ireland’s Italian coach Giovanni Trappatoni believes his tem are capable of beating the French in Dublin and then maybe holding out for a draw in Paris four days later, thereby ensuring safe passage through to South Africa. Of course, French coach Domeneche will have other ideas as he plots his team’s passage through to the finals.
France played their football in Group Seven of the qualifying stages, and eventually lost out automatic qualification to Serbia by a solitary point. This was seen as a disappointed by the French public who at the end turned on the manager.
