The Republic played their qualifying games in Group Eight of the competition and made a good fist of pushing Italy all the way. France played their football in Group Seven of the qualifying stages, and eventually lost out automatic qualification to Serbia by a solitary point. This was seen as a disappointed by the French public who at the end turned on the manager.
