Fourth ranked Mali and second ranked Benin will battle it out on Sunday, June 21st, and if Mali wants to make it to the Nations Cup then they need to bring everything they got to this game. Mali has played two matches so far, and they took the lead early, but still ended with a 1 to 1 draw with Sudan in their opening match. Then, they went on the host Ghana, who proceeded to whip them 2-0. This gives Mali just a single point while their three competitors on Africa's Group D board have 6, 3 and 1, with Ghana leading and Benin in second.
This isn't the start that Mali wanted for sure, but if they decide to turn up the heat and come back to win on Sunday then they could still put themselves in a position to qualify. However this match is against Benin, who have had an impressive record this season. As Ghana has a record of no losses this season, in order for Mali to qualify they are going to have to make this game count to be able to remain within reach of qualification.
Benin began their qualifying by losing to Ghana in Kumasi, but it was a very narrow win and it stemmed from the fact that Benin has players drawn from the pool that competed at the 2005 U20 World Cup and they are all used to working together as they have been playing for a long time together. Players such as Razak Omtoyossi and Stephane Sessegnon certainly add to the common skill level of the team, and while these factors will certainly influence the game, the Mali's have on their side the need to win, knowing the losing this game will almost certainly end the journey for them.
It's going to be a great match as the African Groups Qualifiers continue, and these teams gain last minute points that will decide who will go on to The World Cup, The Nations Cup or goes home.
